Ammonia Release at CVR Nitrogen Plant, Coffeyville, Kansas

Summary of Incident

On Saturday, October 11, 2025, at approximately 4:00 p.m., an ammonia release occurred at the CVR Partners nitrogen fertilizer facility in Coffeyville, Kansas. Emergency services from Coffeyville and surrounding jurisdictions responded to the incident. Reports indicate that at least 15 individuals were exposed to the chemical and transported to area hospitals for medical evaluation. CVR Partners confirmed the release and stated that an investigation into the cause is underway. The City of Coffeyville issued a statement that there was no threat to the public following the incident.

The CVR Coffeyville site includes a petroleum refinery and an adjacent nitrogen fertilizer plant, which is operated by CVR Partners. This fertilizer plant produces ammonia and urea ammonium nitrate (UAN). The facility is notable for its use of a petroleum coke gasification process to produce hydrogen for ammonia synthesis, utilizing feedstock from the co-located refinery.
